Prompt debugging: iterations, negative prompts, and quality control
In previous lessons you learned to write prompts as a specification (goal → scene → style → constraints), add cinematic language, control timing with beats, protect continuity with passports, and scale into multi-shot sequences.
This article is about making the workflow reliable: how to debug when results drift, how to iterate without breaking what already works, how to use negative prompts correctly, and how to evaluate output with a repeatable quality control process.

The debugging mindset: treat your prompt like an experiment
Video generation often fails because you change too many things at once: wording, camera, action, style, duration, and then you cannot tell what caused improvement or regression.
A stable debugging mindset is:
Your prompt is a testable specification, not a poem.
Every iteration should have a single hypothesis.
You should be able to answer: what exactly changed, and why?If your tool supports it, lock the randomness so you can compare runs:
Fix the seed to reduce variance between generations (concept: Random seed).

When debugging, use short clips first (3–5 seconds), because duration is a complexity budget.
A robust loop looks like this:
Write a baseline prompt using the course structure (goal → scene → style → constraints).
Generate a small batch (for example, 4 variants) with the same settings.
Evaluate output with a fixed QC checklist (see below).
Diagnose the failure mode (identity drift, camera chaos, unreadable action, etc.).
Edit one block only (scene or camera or constraints), keeping everything else identical.
Regenerate and compare.

Prompt diffs: edit by blocks, not by rewriting
Because your prompt is structured, you can iterate like software development: do “diffs” by block.
Good iteration behavior:
Keep the character/prop/location passports verbatim across attempts.
Change only one of these at a time:
- Action timing
- Camera movement
- Framing and focus
- Lighting description
- Constraints / negative prompt
Bad iteration behavior:
Rewriting the entire prompt each time.

Most failures in AI video are repeatable patterns. Use the table to diagnose quickly.

Negative prompts vs constraints: what they are and how to use them
Different tools use different UI labels:
Negative prompt usually means “things to avoid” in a dedicated field.
Constraints are the same idea but embedded in your structured prompt.Conceptually, they do one job: protect your priorities from common failure patterns.
What negative prompts are good for
Use negative prompts when the model keeps adding unwanted artifacts:
text, logos, watermarks
extra limbs, distorted hands
face warping / identity drift
unwanted camera shake
sudden cuts inside one shotWhat negative prompts are not good for
Avoid using negative prompts as a replacement for a clear scene.
If your positive prompt is vague, a long negative list usually makes results worse:
the model may over-suppress details and produce “dead” visuals

The best negatives are:

Global negatives (often safe defaults):

Treat this as a starting point, then remove items that conflict with your creative intent.
Quality control: define “good” before you generate
Debugging is slow when “good” is subjective. Make it measurable.
In this course, the goal block is your QC contract. If your goal does not include success criteria, you cannot evaluate iterations consistently.
A simple QC rubric (fast and repeatable)
Score every candidate clip on the same criteria. For example, use a 0–2 scale per item:
Identity: face and outfit stable
Action: the intended action is readable
Camera: one clear camera logic, no random shake
Composition: main subject stays prioritized
Lighting/color: consistent with the intended mood
Artifacts: hands, flicker, text/logosThen pick the winner.

QC checklist for multi-shot sequences
For sequences (multiple shots you edit later), add continuity checks:
Passports copied verbatim into every shot prompt
Wardrobe and key props match between shots
Directional continuity when needed (gaze direction, hand used)

Parameter discipline: do not “fix prompt problems” with random settings
Many tools expose parameters such as “guidance strength” (often called CFG) and “steps”. Even when names differ, the principle is the same:
Prompt text controls what and how.
Parameters control how strongly the model obeys and how much compute it spends.Debug in this order:
Fix the prompt structure and remove contradictions.
Reduce complexity (shorter duration, fewer beats).
Only then tune parameters to improve polish.If you tune parameters while the prompt is unclear, you amplify randomness rather than reduce it.
Logging and versioning: make your progress reproducible
If you cannot reproduce a good result, you cannot scale it into a series.
Keep a generation log. It can be a spreadsheet or a text file, but it must be consistent.
Version your prompt like v1.0, v1.1, v1.2. A version should represent one intentional change.
Worked debugging example: three iterations without losing control
Below is an example of how to iterate while keeping invariants stable.
Baseline (v1.0): too vague camera and timing
Typical output issues:

Only change: the scene timing and camera description.
Result you are aiming for:
smaller motion, clearer story beat
